High-voltage testing technology and the testing of installations and equipment are the core business of Advanced Testing Systems Inc. (ATS). Since it was founded in 1982, the company has steadily broadened and expanded its portfolio. ATS offers its services across the whole of the USA, but also in Canada and Mexico – and these services are more in demand than ever before.
Testing of high-voltage installations is booming in the USA right now. No wonder then that Mike Sowerby, Director of Engineering at Advanced Testing Systems, and his highly qualified team have their hands full. “I think the market situation may well be the best we have ever seen. There really is a lot happening out there right now”, explains the graduate electrical engineer. The reason for this is that huge infrastructure projects are currently under way in the USA. The state of New Jersey alone has invested billions recently in order to modernize its electricity grid. On top of this, a shift in awareness is also currently taking place: “In the USA we are noticing that a lot more testing is being performed than it was 15 years ago, because many companies are now realizing that they can avoid more serious problems further down the line by identifying and remedying issues early on”, emphasizes Sowerby.

In the area of high-voltage applications, ATS offers AC and DC current testing for gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), cables and transformers. The company can perform tests at up to 1,000 kV. Clients include transformer and cable manufacturers like Siemens, ABB, Hitachi and Nexans. But testing is not all that the specialists from ATS do – they also take care of the maintenance and servicing of high-voltage test equipment. “We look after all test systems from all high-voltage installation manufacturers such as HIGHVOLT, Haefely, Phenix or HVTest”, explains Sowerby. Following the acquisition of ATS, HIGHVOLT is now able to offer its customers in the USA even faster service than before. And not just this: “We also provide commissioning support for HIGHVOLT projects in North America”, says Sowerby.

ATS also performs testing of medium and low voltage systems at private companies and state-run institutions such as hospitals or old people’s homes. In this area, the company's main focus is on the states of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. The company also offers a special 24/7 emergency service. “Even over the weekend our customers can reach us, and we will send out a service technician as quickly as possible”, explains Sowerby. Born in Britain, he is extremely proud of his team: “We have highly qualified and experienced employees – and this is something our customers really appreciate, because it is not something they can necessarily take for granted.”
